What is Hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy is the therapeutic use of water alongside controlled exercise and rehabilitation techniques, to help treat a wide range of physical conditions, or to enhance the general health, fitness and mental wellbeing of your dog. We harness the properties of water to effectively and safely treat our patients.
What to Expect from your Hydrotherapy Session
Your dog’s treatment will be in the pool or hydrotherapy treadmill, they may benefit from a combination of the two. We use a holistic approach to our treatment plans, taking into account your dog’s medical history, our land based assessment and the information you give us about them.
We want your dog to be a willing participant in treatment so it is essential that we take things at their pace and adjust treatment to ensure they are always comfortable with what we are asking them to do, and with our handling.
Your dog will have a therapist in the pool or hydrotherapy treadmill with them at all times, where needed there may be multiple therapists. Using therapeutic handling we will assist your dog during treatment to enhance their movement.
Water Temperature:The water is kept at between 30-32 degrees, this warm water will encourage an increase in blood flow, aid muscle relaxation and reduce inflammation, which in turn can reduce pain.
Showering: We shower your dog both before and after their treatment, the use of the warm water can be used to stimulate particular muscles, preparing them for therapy. If your dog finds showering worrying, we can avoid this step.
Drying: Your dog will be gently towel dried following their session to ensure they are as dry as possible. We avoid the use of grooming dryers in the majority of cases, as these can cause reflexive muscle contractions which can be detrimental to the success of the therapy that your dog has received. We ask that you please bring a towel with you to each session, and if you have one, a warm coat / drying robe for them to wear post treatment. (we do stock HotterDog fleeces at the pool, please ask us if you would like to try one for your dog)
Toys: We have a range of toys available to help motivate your dog, which have been assessed as safe for the pool environment. The ingestion of excessive volumes of water can, however, be very harmful. Due to this we like to avoid having dogs retrieve directly out of the water.
Treats: We recommend bringing along some high value treats, this is particularly useful during treadmill treatment, to encourage your dog to walk forward on the moving belt. We do have treats available, but we find dogs are often more motivated for their favourite treats.
